There's No Place Like Home, from its conception to its creation, is a testament to the value of community and how none of us would be where we are without the people around us. The idea for this documentary came to me when I moved from my hometown in Toronto to Montreal at the young age of 17. I had moved to the city with no car, no family around me to help with my move and no clue how to approach living independently. I discovered true love within my chosen family in Montreal, and this is what drove the story of There's No Place Like Home.
This documentary highlights the significance of communal support and resilience within the queer community. The subjects share the importance of being surrounded by community, especially when we live in a world where queer people are still surrounded by negativity. It showcases how chosen families serve as a crucial lifeline in the face of adversity. As chosen families have been the much-needed support queer people get when they can’t find the same support from their birth families.
Our sleep deprived crew finished pre-production, packed our bags, got in a car filled to the brim with equipment and made our way to Montreal. It was the final day of production, we had an hour left in our shoot day, our Producer (Sophie Moreno Kris) sat in small room with me in front of the monitors as our Sound Recordist (Lia Lee) sat in the corner of the kitchen with our subjects while our DOP (Samarika Dhiman) and Camera Operator (Will Scanlon) listened closely to my directions over the phone in their airpods. Our subject began to share their experiences with their chosen family, which they were hesitant about sharing initially, the camera zoomed in and we got the shot we knew was going to make our film.
I am incredibly grateful for the support I have gotten to making an idea I had as a 17 year old into a reality. I hope you all are able to see the love you have in your life as you watch this film, because that is exactly what it has done for me.
